Spruce Head — A snowball fight during a day off from school ended with a 29-year-old South Thomaston man being arrested for shooting a child with a pellet rifle.

Dmytro Zaiets was arrested shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, and charged with reckless conduct with a weapon and terrorizing, according to Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison.

Zaiets was taken to the Knox County Jail in Rockland and released on $1,000 unsecured bail.

According to the sheriff, the department received a call shortly before 1 p.m. about three children (ages 12 and 13) having a snowball fight. She said it got out of hand and Zaiets took a 22-cailber Ruger Superpoint pellet rifle and fired at the children to scare them away,

One pellet hit one of the children in the arm. The boy required medical attention, the sheriff said.

The case remains under investigation by Deputy Nathaniel Jack.
