“Cream Wool Scarf” is a recent oil on canvas by Camden artist Marianne W. Smith.

Camden — Local artist Marianne W. Smith will open her annual show of new work Monday, Aug. 18, at her gallery, 12 Bay View St. (below Bayview Street Cinema). There will be an artist reception with light refreshments from 5 to 7 p.m.

Smith’s show features new oil paintings of still lifes, portraits and Maine’s coastal island and working waterfront scenes. Reflecting on her style of painting, Smith said that as an artist, the interplay of light and shadow and the rich use of colors are her strongest focus.

“This visual play between these elements brings life and movement to my subject matter, whether I am painting fisherman’s dories, landscapes or still lifes,” she said.

The Marianne W. Smith Summer Gallery is open when the artist is in residence. The new works are on display through the fall. Smith’s work may also be viewed online at
