Damariscotta — River Arts invites the public to join artists for the opening reception of its newest exhibition, “Small Works,” Friday, Dec. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. More than 70 artists from all over Maine will be showing 125 artworks in a wide variety media including sculpture, photography, collage, painting, ceramics and fine crafts — representational and abstract.

The exhibition will hang through Jan. 5. The juror for this show was Wes LaFountain. In addition to the “Small Works” opening Friday night, seven artists from the Belfast area will host a reception in the West Gallery for their “Women Artists of Midcoast Maine”; and visitors will be able to get a first look at the works of People’s Choice winners Amy Peters, Sheri Hume and Jessica Lowell.

Midcoast artists selected to show their “Small Works” include Jean Byrd, Liz Donald, Leecia Price and Hillary Steinau of Camden; Caitlyn Mello of Jackson; Petrea Noyes of Lincolnville; Leslie Woods of Montville; Judith Grossman of South Thomaston; Dianne Horton of Swanville; Hannah Nelsbach of Tenants Harbor; Michael Moseley of Thomaston; Jean Kigel, Deborah Loughlin, Robert Macdonald, Ted Mohlie, Brooke Pacy and Joyce Steel of Waldoboro.

River Arts holds 10 themed, open, juried exhibitions per year, with some of Maine’s most prominent art community members as jurors. More than 1,000 different Maine artists have exhibited in these shows; and more than 7,000 people visited the gallery and participated in events and workshops last year.
