Cape Elizabeth — The 21st annual running of the TD Beach-To-Beacon 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) road race — the most high-profile event of its kind in the Pine Tree State — saw a whopping 6,528 runners, including more than 50 Midcoast participants, pound the pavement along the scenic route from Cape Elizabeth to Portland on Saturday, Aug. 4 in the hope of crossing the finish line at the iconic Portland Head Light.

By race’s end, it was 28-year-old Jake Robertson of Hamilton, New Zealand who proved a cut above the rest as he completed the course with a time of 27 minutes and 37 seconds — a 4:27 per-mile pace — to finish first overall in the colossal field.

Robertson finished 10 seconds from tying the course record (27:27.7) set by Gilbert Okari of Kenya in 2003.

The well-known event, started by Olympic gold medalist and Maine native Joan Benoit-Samuelson, annually draws runners from around the world.

Ben True of West Lebanon, N.H. — formerly of North Yarmouth and the 2016 Beach-To-Beacon winner — was the first American to finish at third overall with a time of 28:29. Ryan Smith of Farmington was the top Maine finisher at 23rd overall (30:50).

The Midcoast was well-represented at the race as more than 50 area runners crossed the finish line.

The top Midcoast finisher — 42-year-old Scott Layton of Camden — placed 254th overall with a time of 39 minutes and 28 seconds.

The race began near Crescent Beach State Park on Route 77 in Cape Elizabeth and concluded at Portland Head Light. The course is as much of a challenge as it is picturesque with many peaks and valleys along the way in addition to the breathtaking views of Casco Bay.

In a grueling test of their endurance, a few area runners competed in back-to-back 10Ks in 24 hours, having competed in the Beach to Beacon on Saturday and then the Maine Lobster Festival 10K on Sunday in Rockland.

The individual results for Midcoast participants, with places, names, ages, residence and times included, were: 254, Scott Layton, 42, Rockport, 39:28; 385, Shawn Rumery, 32, Searsmont, 41:51; 425, Jeffrey Bowman, 50, Camden, 42:30; 544, Darren Winchenbach, 37, Saco (Waldoboro native), 43:54; 665, Rob Fowler, 41, Morrill, 45:02; 692, Cassandra Howard, 22, Searsmont, 45:20; 699, Charlie Collins, 14, Winterport, 45:24; 713, Brendan McCarthy, 40, Hope, 52:07; 1,037, Simon Castle, 49, Rockport, 48:19; 1,228, Ronald Stevenson, 46, Knox, 49:37; 1,279, Scott Lash, 50, Waldoboro, 50:00; 1,290, Rebekah Hilt, 22, Camden, 50:03; 4,583, Jeffrey Hilt, 47, Union, 50:13; 1,420, Adam Kohlstrom, 42, Camden, 50:53; 1,423, Kaly Rumery, 31, Searsmont, 50:55; 1,460, Adam Barnard, 54, Belfast, 51:09; 1,477, Jonathan Rice, 52, Winterport, 51:13; 1,637, Kate Daggett, 50, Washington, 52:07; 1,708, Tristan Petersen, 37, Swanville, 52:33; 1,791, Joshua Moore, 47, Camden, 52:59; 1,796, Diana Castle, 47, Rockport, 53:01; 1,886, Annie Fagan, 25, Camden, 53:34; 1,893, Erin Spencer-Mullen, 42, Camden, 53:37; 1,952, Mark Fourre, 59, Camden, 53:57; 1,989, Don Hoenig, 67, Belfast, 54:09; 2,213, Katherine Killoran, 50, Rockport, 55:14; 2,222, Kaitlyn Kessel, 17, Lincolnville, 55:16; 2,329, Aofie Durow, 40, Camden, 55:46; 2,420, Emily McDevitt, 53, Camden, 56:12; 2,531, Tony Swebilius, 74, Morrill, 56:41; 3,286, Richard Reitchel, 39, Palermo, 1:00:22; 3,367, Riley Reitchel, 14, Palermo, 1:00:47; 3,395, Nell Dailey, 41, Rockport, 1:00:52; 3,808, Natalie Marceau, 28, Camden, 1:02:54; 3,833, Melissa Howard, 48, Searsmont, 1:03:03; 3,868, Rebecca Lynch, 28, Winterport, 1:03:13; 3,932, Mark O’Donal, 47, Lincolnville, 1:03:31; 4,077, Noah Howard, 20, Searsmont, 1:04:17; 4,160, Robyn Thibodeau, 53, Belfast, 1:04:53; 4,263, Amy Mitchell, 54, Rockland, 1:05:28; 4,326, Donna Broderick, 49, Belfast, 1:05:50; 4,688, Daniel Guptill, 52, Rockland, 1:08:09; 4,843, Holly Harmon, 40, Palermo, 1:09:24; 5,068, Kathleen Murray, 64, Troy, 1:11:16; 5,128, Diane Ross, 62, Owls Head, 1:11:44; 5,418, Martha Parent, 61, Rockland, 1:14:39; 5,473, Jamie Ames, 41, Hope, 1:15:07; 5,627, Theresa Lash, 49, Warren, 1:16:47; 5,807, Sophie Moore, 18, Camden, 1:19:20; 6,014, Teresa Merrifield, 47, Belmont, 1:23:43; 6015, Kimberly Merrifield, 27, Swanville, 1:23:44; 6,142, Stephanie Brown, 39, Camden, 1:26:37; 6,295, Keisha Hartt-Donovan, 31, Monroe, 1:31:52; 6,300, Dawn Preston, 55, Belfast, 1:32:09; 6,395, Andrew Zulieve, 64, Waldoboro, 1:37:45; and 6,402, Joe McGurn, 70, Rockland, 1:38:26.
