Sketching ‘Not Far From Home’ at Kramer

Aug 05, 2018
“Belfast City Park” is a watercolor and ink from the sketchbook of Rita Swidrowski.

Belfast — Rita Swidrowski presents her second show of sketchbook pages in the Kramer Gallery of Belfast Free Library, 106 High St., Tuesday, Aug. 7, through Sept. 4. Sketches in “Not Far From Home" include locations from Acadia National Park, Belfast and Midcoast Maine, her current home; to South Portland, her home for many years.

Swidrowski enjoys deepening her visual and personal experiences, recording the things she learns and discovers each day in drawn and written sketchbook journals. Moments in time get transformed into personal stories and memories get preserved.

The retired art teacher also enjoys encouraging others to journal and sketch. As a result of her first show at the library, a Sketchers Group began meeting monthly there. The format was recently expanded to include other art subjects, and the meetings are now facilitated by various participants. Some of the ongoing participants organize separate weekly sketch group trips to various sites such as gardens, lakes, mountains, farms, cafés and the local coastline.

The next meeting of what is now called The Belfast Free Art Group will be Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. All are welcome.
