Sherman M. Stanley

Osprey, Fla. — Sherman M. Stanley, 93, also of Monhegan Island, passed away at the Sarasota Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sarasota, Fla., April 13, 2019, with his family by his side. Sherman was born Aug. 7, 1925, in Friendship, the son of Dwight F. Stanley and Freda Bell Murphy Stanley, both of whom predeceased him.

Sherman grew up in Friendship and attended local schools. He attended two years of high school in Friendship and then finished at Thomaston High School. After high school Sherman joined the Navy during World War II. On Sept. 28, 1946, he married Barbara Mendolia.

Sherman began commercial fishing with his father, and in the winter of 1948 he went out on his own. He did fishing charter parties in the 1950s and 1960s, jigging for cod and pollock. Sherman always enjoyed “fun” fishing and being around boats. He also owned and ran a gas and LP business on Monhegan Island.

Sherman joined the Meduncook #211 Masonic Lodge in 1947. He was a member of the VFW in Friendship, as well as a member of the American Legion. Sherman was a member of the Monhegan Church.

He was predeceased by his parents as well as his brother, Alfred Stanley.

Sherman is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Barbara Mendolia Stanley; son Sherman D. Stanley of Monhegan Island; his daughter, Caroline Sutherland, of Camden; grandchildren Dwight P. Stanley of Cumberland, Sam Sutherland of New York, Adair Bell of South Carolina; and a great-grandchild, Caden Bell, of South Carolina.

Per Sherman’s wishes, his ashes will be scattered at sea at a later date.
