We’re changing things up at Pope Memorial Humane Society. Over the last 12 years, our LFL column has had one voice. As executive director, I [Tracy Sala] have written a weekly column, almost 600 in total, sharing my weekly pet picks, shelter news and my gratitude for the unflagging support of our generous community. It’s time to give other staff members the opportunity to share their shelter news and introduce you to the shelter animals that touch their hearts. First up is PMHS Events Coordinator Kasey Bielecki.

Our pet pick this week is Lucia. This lovely black-and-white kitty with the milk mustache came into the shelter back in December. Both she and her brother were abandoned in an apartment when their owners moved out. Her brother was recently adopted, meaning Lucia is still waiting on the perfect new home. She can be playful, but mostly wants a quiet home with lots of sun. Additionally, she is more than happy to be your cat treat taste tester. Lucia is hoping that whoever adopts her is planning to submit recipes to the Pope Memorial Humane Society's 30th anniversary cookbook.

In case you couldn’t tell, we are still collecting recipes. If you have a favorite recipe that you would like to include in our anniversary cookbook, drop it off in the lobby of the shelter. We would love it if you include a note about the recipe or why you support Pope Memorial Humane Society. Just recently some of our alumni stopped in and submitted recipes to be included in the pet treat section!

Are you a fan of birthdays? If you’re feeling festive and want to celebrate a birthday, then make sure you head out to Odd Alewives Farm Brewery in Waldoboro Saturday, March 16. Last year the crew at Odd Alewives met Harriet, the kitten, at Long Winter Soap Co., one of our satellite adoption locations. It was love at first sight and she quickly became the now-famous “Rocket, the brewery cat.” On March 16 we will celebrate Rocket’s first birthday. From 1 to 3 p.m., staff members and volunteers will be on site with adoptable cats. The brewery will also donate 10 percent of all sales that day to Pope.

Finally, don’t miss the chance to sit down and watch 70 minutes of silly internet cat videos. The Strand is hosting CatVideoFest 2019 March 24. Ten percent of all ticket sales will go directly to the shelter. What better way for all of us to come together than by watching fun cat videos?
