ROCKPORT — Emily Sheffer has been awarded the prestigious Book Artist in Residence opportunity for the month of October at Maine Media Workshops + College. This artist residency includes full access to the Maine Media Book Arts studio and equipment, a weekly stipend and materials fees, as well as use of an apartment overlooking Rockport Harbor.

With a project focused on the impact of climate change on algae, Sheffer will combine the historic process of cyanotype printing with letterpress text in the books that she will produce during her month in residence at Maine Media.

Sheffer earned her BFA in Photography with Departmental Honors from The Massachusetts College of Art and Design in May of 2015. Her work has been featured in exhibitions throughout the world. In 2015, Sheffer was listed as a LensCulture Top 50 Emerging Photographer, and was invited to participate in Center Review Santa Fe 2016.

In 2017, she founded Dust Collective, a handmade photography book collective, and has since published more than a dozen titles. She currently works as a fine art photographer and studio director in Cambridge, Mass.

“I’m very excited and grateful for this opportunity. I’m familiar with the workshops and I’ve been here a couple of times before, it’s always exciting to come back. I’m ready to get my hands dirty, make some cyanotypes and get into the book studio,” said Sheffer when asked about coming to Maine Media Workshops this fall. Sheffer’s first attendance at Maine Media was in the Young Artist program for high school teens.

This October Sheffer will be furthering her work in the Maine landscape, “I will find and identify algae, and make an original cyanotype print of each specimen. I will use my time in Maine as a way to engage in a dialogue about climate change with experts in marine research, as well as the concerned public.”

Jim Nickelson is also an awardee and will be the Book Artist in Residence from November 2019 through May 2020.

Maine Media Workshops + College is a nonprofit educational institution that was originally founded 45 years ago as Maine Photographic Workshops and serves to educate and inspire visual artists and storytellers.
