Seventh Midcoast Breast Cancer Classic raises $23,500

Tournament has raised more than $100,000 for the Oncology Patient Assistance Funds at Pen Bay Medical Center

Rockland — The Rockland Women’s Golf Association and Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation hosted another successful Midcoast Breast Cancer Classic golf tournament, the seventh annual event, on Aug. 11 at the Rockland Golf Club.

More than 100 golfers and 150 sponsors participated and supported the event. More than $23,500 was raised to help provide financial assistance funds for cancer patients of Pen Bay Medical Center.

Sue Wootton, one of the organizers of the tourney, said her group thanks "all of the local businesses, individuals, volunteers and dedicated players who supported the efforts of the golf committee and the Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation.

Over seven years, the Midcoast Breast Cancer Classic has raised more than $100,000 for the Oncology Patient Assistance Funds at Pen Bay Medical Center.

The “Dine Around” Raffle also was a successful venture, Wootton said. Many golf courses donated rounds of play for the prizes. Those clubs making donations were: Samoset Golf Club, Natanis Golf Club, Northport Golf Club, Rockland Golf Club, Searsport Pines Golf Club, Sheepscot Links Golf Club, Spring Meadows Golf Club, Bath Country Club, Wawenock Golf Club, Augusta Country Club, Goose River Golf Club, Meadows Golf Club and Megunticook Golf Club.

There were many volunteers from the community who helped the day of the event, Wootton said. They included: Ernie and Mary Benner, Nancy Eugley, Sue Tolman, Sandra Lundquist, James Murray and Jennifer Murray.

Wootton said the fundraiser has become so successful and has helped so many breast cancer patients that the important decision was made to open up financial support in 2018 for all cancer patients of Pen Bay Medical Center, not just those diagnosed with breast cancer.

"This change will allow for financial assistance for those in our community who need it most," she said. '

The 2018 Midcoast Cancer Classic will be on Aug. 10.
