Second heavy snowfall for March in forecast; blizzard warning posted

Mar 13, 2018
Photo by: Beth A. Birmingham A scene from last week's snowstorm may be repeated Tuesday, March 13, with up to 18 inches of snow forecast for parts of the Midcoast.

Another nor'easter is on its way. According to meteorologist Tyler Southard, an area of low pressure strengthening off the coast of the Carolinas Monday, March 12, will move up the east coast through the late day and overnight and then move northeast through the southern Gulf of Maine Tuesday as it continues to intensify.

The storm will take a turn north on Wednesday just to the east of Maine passing over Nova Scotia then into the Canadian Maritimes. The center of the storm will backtrack west slightly toward northeast Maine Thursday morning before eventually exiting the region late Thursday.

With the storm lingering across the region for such a long period, impacts from snow accumulation will be felt across the Midcoast for a larger period compared to last week's nor'easter. Temperatures will be slightly colder with this storm compared to last week's nor'easter which will make for a lighter and fluffier snow that should stick less to trees and power lines. This will reduce the threat of power outages with winds not expected to reach damaging speeds.
