Waldoboro — As one team looked to remain undefeated and another searched for its first win of the early season, the athletic rivalry between Oceanside and Medomak Valley high schools was renewed on the soccer pitch on Thursday, Sept. 7 — and, ultimately, lived up to the billing in a tightly-contested match.

In the end, the Mariners — who have never lost to Medomak Valley in Oceanside's seven-year history — pumped in a pair of second-half goals to break a 1-1 tie and, ultimately, sailed to a 3-1 girls road pitch victory.

Hope Butler had a goal and an assist in the victory for Oceanside, while Cassidy Boynton (goal), Gabby Straka (goal), Abby Veilleux (assist) and Molly Gould (assist) also chipped in on offense for the visitors.

Abby Lash creased the net for Medomak Valley’s lone score of the afternoon.

Despite the loss, Medomak Valley (0-3) held a 12-8 edge over Oceanside (2-0-1) in shots, while the Mariners attempted the only two penalty corners of the game.

Raechel Joyce made eight saves in net for the Mariners and Kayla Donlin six stops in goal for the Panthers.

After the squads battled back and forth as neither side generated much offense through much of the first half, Butler finally put the Mariners on the board as she received a pass from Veilleux, pushed past a pair of Panther defenders and deposited the ball into the net with 8:42 remaining.

The goal was nearly costly for the visitors, however, as Veilleux went down, as the goal was scored, with a deep leg bruise and did not return to the contest.

And without one of Oceanside’s top all-around players off the pitch, Medomak Valley converted an equalizer with 2:29 to play in the half.

Cassie Smeltzer put a shot on the Mariner net and the keeper Joyce momentarily had control of the ball, but it slipped through her fingers and back into the field of play.

Lash pounced on the opportunity as she creased the net to knot the score 1-1.

Then in the early stages of the second half, Boynton — playing with a padded brace after breaking her wrist in summer soccer — collected a pass from Butler on the wing and, ultimately, gave Oceanside the lead for good with 31:14 remaining in the contest.

Straka added a late goal for Oceanside at the 3:49-mark when she booted the ball across the frame of the goal — and the ball caught the far post — and redirected over the line for the visitors.

The squads again will tussle on Tuesday, Sept. 26 in Thomaston.
