Rockport — While Belfast and Camden Hills will get an opportunity to vie for a championship in the regional playoffs, the Windjammers put themselves in strong contention for a top spot in the final standings with a comfortable, regular season-ending win over the Lions.

In the second meeting between the high school boys basketball squads, this time, on Friday night, Feb. 26, the host Windjammers surged in the second half to beat the Lions 77-48.

Camden Hills also bested Belfast 56-48 earlier in the pandemic-altered and -shortened campaign.

With Friday’s outcome, the Windjammers improved to 9-2 and Belfast dipped to 4-8.

Thus, for the Kno-Wal-Lin (Knox-Waldo-Lincoln county) COVID Basketball Tournament, Camden Hills will fill the first or second spot and Belfast the sixth and final position. Standings are determined by a team’s winning percentage since squads do not play the same number of games.

At this point, Camden Hills is first and Medomak Valley second with the same record because the Windjammers defeated the Panthers twice during the regular season. However, the Panthers have one final game with Lincoln Academy of Newcastle on Tuesday, March 2.

If Medomak Valley wins that game, and it beat the Eagles handedly earlier in the campaign, the Panthers would be the top seed and Camden Hills the second seed for the playoffs.

Thus, No. 6 Belfast will play at No. 3 Oceanside of Rockland (8-3) and Camden Hills will receive a first-round bye, before the Windjammers face the Oceanside-Belfast winner in the second round if they are the two seed and the No. 5. Boothbay Region (4-7)-No. 4 Mount View of Thorndike (8-4) winner in the second round if they are the one seed.

In Friday’s regular-season finale, the Windjammers trailed 16-13 after the first quarter and 32-26 at halftime before they took a 55-43 third-quarter advantage. In fact, the hosts outscored the visitors 51-16 in the final 16 minutes.

That second-half charge by Camden Hills was made possible by an electric, complete performance by Jeremy Fraser, who tossed in 39 points, an effort that included seven points in the first quarter, six in the second and 13 in the third and fourth, along with four trifectas and 11-of-12 foul shots (92 percent).

Fraser got help as Hunter Norton scored 15 points, all over the final 24 minutes. Casey Messer added eight points; Aidan Schecter and Ryan Clifford, four; Obi Miller, three; and Quincy Messer and Westen DeWaard, two.

The Windjammers made 15-of-19 free throws (79 percent) and also got two treys from Casey Messer and one from Norton and Miller.

For the Lions, who played without injured Chris Kelley, one of their most consistent and best performers, Jason Bartlett again led the charge with 25 points, including connecting on four three-pointers. Tanner Veilleux added 12 points; Tommy Walker, five; Chase Sanders, Drew Abelon and Ethan Hall, two. The visitors made 8-of-12 foul shots (67 percent).

Interestingly, the game also marked the second this season in which Belfast coach Marty Messer had to face off against two of his sons, Casey and Quincy, who play for Camden Hills.
