Schooner skiers fourth in Alpine slalom race

Simon wins girls race, Manahan top participant for CRMS boys

Farmington — The Camden-Rockport Middle School ski squads took part in the Titcomb Mountain Alpine slalom race Jan. 26, with the Schooners ending the day with strong individual and team performances.

The Schooner teams finished fourth in their respective races, which showcased squads from Spruce, Sugarloaf, Maranacook, Mount Vernon, Rangeley, Auburn and Falmouth.

The girls team scores were: Spruce 37, Sugarloaf 42, Auburn 59, Camden-Rockport 61, Falmouth 64, Mount Vernon 101, Rangeley 136 and Maranacook no score.

The boys team scores were: Maranacook 33, Mount Vernon 38, Spruce 68, Camden-Rockport 85, Falmouth 100, Auburn 104, Sugarloaf 112,and Rangeley no score.

On the girls side, Ella Simon won with a combined time (two runs) of 1:25.31, coming from behind to best Sugarloaf's Emma Kearing. Jillian Galloway (13th) had two strong runs and timed in at 1:41.76, while Zoe Zwecker (20th, 1:45.18), Courtney King (27th, 1:54.40) and Elaine Landry (38th, 2:31.09) also skied well, said Schooner coach Weber Roberts.

On the boys side, Aidan Manahan (14th, 1:28.26), Warren Galloway (20th, 1:34.80), Cedar Andrus (27th, 1:38.77), Caellen Roberts (32, 1:41.01), Michael Frampton (33rd, 1:42.15), Hayden Christie (35th, 1:43.30), Ethan Andrus (40, 1:48.58), Spencer Johndro (49, 2:00.0) and Thomas McClellan (53rd, 2:07.31) finished their respective races.

Hugh Leavitt and Sawyer King, two of the team's veterans, fell and were not included in the team score.

Coach Roberts said he was impressed with the quality of competition and the challenging course.

"It couldn't have been a better day for racing, great snow [and] great light," he said. "The kids have been running slalom gates for the past two weeks at the [Camden] Snow Bowl and the skills the kids learned paid big dividends on the course today. It was terrific see the confidence of all the kids."
