Sara Gideon was in Rockland and Camden Oct. 7 for two events.

Gideon is the Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives and is running for the U.S. Senate.

The event in Rockland was a tour of the Midcoast Habitat for Humanity build site on Philbrick Street. The one in Camden was a town-hall style “Supper with Sara” at the Camden Snow Bowl.

At the Rockland event, three representatives from Midcoast Habitat for Humanity showed Gideon the houses and answered questions regarding the program.

Executive Director Tia Anderson and Board President Susan Taylor were present, as well as board member Vicki Doudera. Doudera is also a Maine House Representative for District 94, which includes Camden, Islesboro and Rockport.

Gideon admired the houses and met some of the construction workers as well. She discussed affordable housing and the work that Midcoast Habitat for Humanity does in Knox County.

Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer-based organization where families who are in need assist in building the houses they will live in, as well as the building of other homes.

Habitat describes itself as “a hand up, not a handout” for these families, as the families contribute “sweat equity” by assisting with building tasks, as well as paying a mortgage.

Midcoast Habitat partners with many local organizations and businesses for financial assistance, supplies and support. They work in conjunction with the Knox County Homeless Coalition, the AIO Food Pantry, Maine Housing and the St. George Development Corp.

The Camden event was Gideon’s 34th Supper With Sara. Will Simons, Gideon’s press secretary, said Gideon has held similar events in all 16 counties. The event was socially-distant, and Gideon answered questions and spoke about her campaign.
