Rockport — Salon Suites by the Sea is expanding to a neighboring garage to add 3,400 square feet to the business, according to Stephanie Turner, who owns it along with her husband, Jim.

She said they are in the process of a complete renovation and expanding at the old Fuller Chevrolet building.

The business is located at 330 Commercial St. in Rockport.

The business differs from a regular salon in that each of the individual stylists is essentially running their own business. They pay a set amount to operate out of the suite and are free to set their own schedule, fees and so on. In a typical salon, Turner said hairdressers are paid on a commission, sometimes with as much as 50 percent of the cost of a haircut going to the salon owners.

There are currently four stylists in four suites, but that is set to expand.

She noted that this system works better for established stylists who have built up a reputation and a client list.

The Turners lease the property from Doug Clayton.
