Russian collaboration for Down East Singers

Nov 28, 2018
The St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble will be part of this year’s Down East Singers’ holiday concerts.

Rockport — Down East Singers, a choral group that enjoys changing its musical style each December, will collaborate with the St. Petersburg (Russia) Men’s Ensemble and pianist Jennifer McIvor in a concert program titled Hark! How the Bells!

The concert will be presented Thursday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, 32 Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor; and Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Rockport Opera House, 6 Central St. Anthony Antolini of Cushing conducts.

These performances are the result of a musical collaboration between Kirill Sokolov, director of the St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble; and Antolini, a specialist in Slavic choral music and editor of a series of publications with E.C. Schirmer and Paraclete Press. Several of Antolini’s latest editions will be performed in these concerts. Featured composers are Bortniansky, Chesnokov, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Golovanov and Shebalin.

The St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble will perform by themselves on the first half of the concert, then combine with Down East Singers on the second half. The folksong “Tania Taniusha” will be accompanied on Russian wooden spoons by Sage Kosky. The name of the concert is the English version of the famous Ukrainian carol “Shchedrik,” which will be sung in its original form.

Admission to the St. Columba’s Church performance is by suggested donation of $20 at the door; no tickets are required. Tickets to the Rockport Opera House performance are $20, free to those younger than 19, and are available in advance from chorus members; online at downeastsingers.org; by calling619-0413; or at The Grasshopper Shop in Rockland and The Owl and Turtle Bookshop in Camden. If tickets remain, they will be available at the box office at 1 p.m. the day of the Rockport performance.
