‘Ronald Frontin and Friends’ at Keag River

Aug 02, 2017
"Rest for the Weary" is a large oil painting by Midcoast’s Ron Frontin; he and his students are exhibiting work this summer at the Keag River Gallery.

South Thomaston — A quiet wave of artistic creativity has been building in the Midcoast area for several years, and the public will finally get a chance to see the results on the walls of the Keag River Gallery.

“Maine Perspectives: Ronald Frontin and Friends” will be open Wednesday, Aug. 9, through Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily. A public reception will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Keag River Gallery, 25 Dublin Road.

In addition to works by Ronald Frontin, more than 30 artists who have been painting with his guidance will have works on display. They include Mary Baldwin Collins, Sherry Dec, Kat Logan, Ann O’Hara, Chuck Paine, Jody Payne, Carl Solberg and John Wood. Under Frontin’s patient hand, artists of all ages and backgrounds have been developing and refining their skills. The public is invited to enjoy the accomplishments of this group of fine artists.

Frontin studied with Nelson Shanks, one of the most renowned portraitists of his time, and shares that level of classic academic process with his own artistic skill and insight in his weekly classes. He has completed a number of noteworthy portraits, including Margaret Chase Smith’s portrait hanging in the U.S. Capitol building and Gov. McKernan’s portrait displayed in the Maine State House.

Frontin’s classes meet twice a week, Mondays from 5 to 7 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the American Legion Post in Thomaston. During the summer, he instructs plein air classes at various locations and often takes his classes on field trips to artists’ studios, galleries and museums for further discussion and enrichment.
