Rockport — Rockport Fire Department held its fourth annual boot drive fundraiser Aug. 9. Volunteer firefighters stood at the intersection of routes 17 and 90 equipped with safety vests and holding boots to collect donations that ranged from loose change to larger dollar amounts. Fire Chief Jason Peasley said the donations go to fund the Bruce C. Woodward Scholarship Fund for graduating high school students pursuing careers in firefighting, emergency medical services and law enforcement. The money also goes toward specialty equipment and tools, as well as more general community assistance that the town budget does not cover.

With the amount of money received, totaling the donations takes time, so the final amount is not yet known. Peasley said, however, that the event was a success.

Apart from the fundraising, he said the event also helps bring awareness to the work of the volunteers and the department, which is on pace to break last year’s record for number of calls responded to.

Anyone who was not in the area and did not have the chance to donate can still give at the fire station.
