Rockland — The Rockland Women’s Golf Association opened its 2017 season at the Rockland Golf Club with a nine-hole scramble on Thursday, April 27, followed by the group's spring meeting and luncheon at Sandbagger’s Café.

RWGA has been in existence for decades at RGC, and the organization welcomes adult women golfers to join its league for only $30 a season.

Applications can be mailed or picked up at the RGC pro shop. One also may request a form via email from Marty Jones, RWGA president, at jonesmhj60@gmail.com.

RWGA tournaments are Thursday mornings, and the cost of entering a tourney is $5, plus the cost of renting a cart, if needed.

Each week, the group plays a different format and gathers for lunch afterwards in the Sandbagger’s Café at the golf club.

Prizes are awarded for each tournament, including the winner of a 50/50 raffle.

While RWGA follows the rules of the American Golf Association, RWGA members keep in mind that playing golf is fun and a great way to make new friends, said Sue Wootton, a longtime association member.

In addition to Thursday tourney days when 18-hole play is required, many members gather at the RGC for a pick-up round on Tuesday mornings (9- or 18-hole play) and/or join the Maine State Women’s Golf Association (MSWGA) and play with women from around the state at various Maine courses.

RWGA currently has 32 active members who reside in Camden, Rockport, Rockland, South Thomaston, Thomaston, Owl's Head, Tenant’s Harbor, Hope, Spruce Head, Warren, Cushing, Friendship, Lincolnville and Jefferson.

Rockland Golf Club is open seven days a week.

Tee times for RWGA weekly events start at 9 a.m. in May, 8:30 a.m. in June, 8 a.m. in July and August, 8:30 a.m. in September and 9 a.m. in October. The season ends on the last Thursday in October.
