Rockland offers info on absentee voting

May 18, 2018

Rockland — Absentee ballots for the June elections are available at Rockland City Hall, but the City Clerk is reminding residents that they cannot cast ballots for the school budget until May 25.

The Regional School Unit 13 district-wide budget meeting -- which residents of the five district communities can attend at Oceanside High School auditorium in Rockland -- is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, May 24.

The June 12 ballot question on the RSU 13 budget is a yes-or-no question on whether to validate the budget adopted at the May 24 meeting; thus there is nothing to vote on by ballot prior to May 25, even though the ballots have been printed.

The city clerk said people can pick up ballots before May 25 and mail them in or drop them starting on May 25. If a person wants to vote by absentee ballot at City Hall prior to May 25, they will not get to vote on the school budget.

June 12 is also the state primary election.

The same will be true in the other RSU 13 communities -- Thomaston, Owls Head, South Thomaston and Cushing.

The public hearing on the RSU13 school budget will be held Thursday, 24 May beginning at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at Oceanside High School in Rockland. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend - residents of the five towns of the RSU (Cushing, Owls Head, Rockland, South Thomaston and Thomaston) are allowed to propose changes to the budget and vote on it. The budget approved at this hearing will be the one on the 12 June ballot.
