Rockland — Jean Young of South Thomaston has long loved libraries.

"It's like a wonderland walking through a library," she said July 11.

Young has worked at the Rockland Public Library for more than 20 years and holds the title of children's librarian. Now, after a career that has allowed her to work with children of all ages and their parents, inspiring lifelong readers and learners in the city, she plans to retire at the end of July.

Young said her family has wanted her to retire for a few years, and now the time is right.

Her career in the area has been a mix of writing, sharing her love of books and working with children.

In the late 1960s, she worked as a weekend reporter for the Bangor Daily News bureau in Rockland. She said she loved the work, which included taking obituaries and going out to take pictures of car crashes. A young mother at the time, she remembered working with her baby in a basket by her desk at the office. When she had to go out to a crash or fire, she had a helpful neighbor who would take her children at a moment's notice.

Her career also included running Little Farmers Nursery School in South Thomaston. The children would go out and see the chickens, collect the eggs and bring them in to make cookies.

She started her library career at the Thomaston library and took courses from there to earn her four-year degree in library science.

She has worked both part-time and full-time at the Rockland Public Library over the past two decades.

"I’ve always been impressed by the way Jean listens to children, and talks to them," said Library Director Amy Levine. "She has also done a remarkable job with the selection of materials for kids, and many, many adults and children have remarked on it. Jean has served the kids and families of Rockland with grace and with love."

Young said she plans to take some time this summer to get settled into her retirement. She enjoys time with her family, gardening, travel and writing.

Members of the community are invited to the Children’s Room of the Rockland Public Library Wednesday, July 24, at 3 p.m. to share stories and enjoy cake and other treats in honor of Young.
