Rockland Kiwanis Club Meeting Minutes for February 17, 2014

Pledge of Allegiance: President Katie Tarbox. Invocation: Jim Heavey
Guests: Gerry Zwick, Key Clubbers: Sam Calamari & Nick Mahar (Key Club Lt. Governor Div 4), Aktion Club: Kurt Leidenroth.

President Katie Tarbox announced that donations of clothing, and household items collected by members were brought to club member Jim Huff, whose family lost everything in a house fire. The club also made a monetary donation of $700.

Committee Reports:
Jane Thompson reported that the Key Club held a Valentines fundraiser, which raised $25 selling hearts with candy kisses passed out at school. The Key Club was also very excited about the new logo, designed by Jeff Lundt, for their t-shirts. They hope to have these done in time for the spring conference April 4th – 6th in Springfield, MA. Meals on Wheels this week will be covered by Jackie Harjula and friend.

Recognition of Members:
Secret Greeter, Nick Mahar did not catch anyone. Badges, or lack of: Margie Kinney, and Greg Hamlin 50/50: Jane Thompson was the lucky ticket holder, but did not pick the joker.
Riddle: Jaap Vroliks’ ticket was picked. Nobody had the answer, but with President Katie’s help, he received the prize.

Happy Sads:
Al McNeilly: Announcement dollar that on March 11th, at the Owls Head Transportation Museum, children from the performing arts will be singing there. Free admission. Jane Thompson: Glad to be here, Sad because she misses Sam, Congratulations to Nick Mahar on being Lt. Gov for Division 4, sad her brother was very sick, and happy for the new t-shirt design. Sam Calamari was happy for all the newly elected Key Club officers. Sandy Millar was happy that he remembered it was Valentine’s Day Friday. Marcia Rowling was happy for her Dad’s 86th birthday. Jim Heavey was happy about helping at the Snow Bowl, and for the speaker, Suzette McAvoy. Cliff Barstow was happy about helping the Aktion Club. Jackie was happy for the Aktion Club's valentine delivery, and for the guests from the Key Club, Aktion Club, and Gerry Zwick who turned in his application for membership. Barbara Hanson was happy for the Oceanside Key Club’s new logo, and her daughter Samantha’s birthday, and Don Kinicki’s birthday Sandy was happy for his grandson’s peewee hockey win. Sumner was happy that Gerry turned in his application for membership. Jaap Vrolijk was sad it was his last meeting after 23 years of membership, because he was moving to Georgia to be with his family. President Katie was sad Jaap was leaving, happy Jerry Zwick turned in his application, happy for the Key Clubs projects, and sad she lost both her favorite glove and earring.

Speaker Suzette McAvoy, director and curator for the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, spoke about its impact on the economy; it’s history and their move to Winter St in Rockland. McAvoy also spoke about the building plans of the new structure, and the opening planned for the summer of 2015.
