Rockland honors city emergency medical staff for saving lives

Rockland — The Rockland City Council honored emergency medical services staff Monday evening, Aug. 12, for saving the lives of two people in separate calls earlier this year.

Assistant Fire Chief Adam Miceli, Capt. Jeffrey Benner, Lt. Patrick Lowe, Lt. Mike Cole, firefighter Ruston Barnard, firefighter Tom Shook, emergency medical technician/paramedic Abby Planeta, Fire Chief Christopher Whytock, retired Lt. Jamie Leo, advanced EMT Taylor Ackerman and a registered nurse from the Bangor area, Shelia Woodward, were honored at Monday's City Council meeting.

The people named in the resolve were credited with saving the lives of Arthur Grinnell and Alfred "Chipper" Widdecombe in two separate calls. The chief said the two men suffered heart attacks and were revived by the emergency personnel.

City Manager Tom Luttrell pointed out that he gets calls regularly from people who praise the work and professionalism of the department.

Councilor Ed Glaser cited the teamwork and training of the fire and emergency medical services staff.

The City Council also provided a plaque and certificate to Rockland Police Sgt. Kenneth Smith for his 20 years with the police department. He continues to work for the department.

Councilor Amelia Magjik praised the work of all police officers, pointing out that they put their lives on the line every day.

The City Council also approved commendations for Jean Young, who retired as children's librarian for the Rockland Public Library, and Mark Rogers for 20 years of service with the city's public services department.
