Rockland — A Melrose Circle North home was heavily damaged Monday afternoon, claiming the life a cat.

The fire at the home of Alan and Nancy Counce of 8 Melorse Circle North was reported shortly after 1 p.m. Crews from Rockland, Thomaston, Camden and Rockport had the fire under control shortly after 1:30 p.m.

Alan Counce said he returned home to find the house on fire and was unsure how it started. He voiced concern about a gas grill being on the back deck and a snowblower and other equipment in the garage at the lower level of the ranch-style house.

Gray smoke was billowing from the home and could be seen from at least a mile away from the scene.

Rockland Fire Chief Christopher Whytock said there was heavy fire in the rear of the home and the basement. The fire later spread to the upper floor and attic.

The Maine Fire Marshal's Office was called in to help find the cause of the fire.

Counce said he had just retired from working at Pen Bay Medical Center.

Friends comforted the couple as they watched the firefighters working to stop the blaze.
