Rockland — Rockland Elks Lodge 1008 held a memorial service Sept. 11 to honor and remember those who died 19 years ago when the Twin Towers were hit by airplanes in a terrorist attack.

The program, which has been an annual event since 2011, was led by Chipper Widdecombe. Widdecombe is Chairman of the Sept. 11 program, two time past Exalted Ruler and past Trustee of the Elks Lodge.

Chaplain Freida Carpenter opened the ceremony with a prayer.

Carl Anderson of the Rockland Fire Department spoke about the events of Sept. 11, and how Americans have continued to show resilience during these uncertain times. “Nineteen years ago the world changed,” Anderson said. “That change is still felt.”

Anderson also spoke about those who died in the attacks and those who have died from cancer and related complications since then.

Exalted Ruler Pam Heal read a poem by Robert Longley, titled Helping Hands. The poem can be found on Longley's website at https://www.sacredpoems.com/a-helping-hand/.

Lecturing Knight Lisa Nickerson also read a poem about Sept. 11.

Color Guard American Legion Post One of Rockland then presented arms, followed by taps.

Boy Scout Troop 200 of Camden was present for the ceremony, as were Rockland Police officers, Drew Graham of the Knox County Sheriff’s office and Bill Demmons of American Legion Post 37 in Thomaston. Demmons is also a past Exalted Ruler of the Rockland Elks Lodge.

Also present from the Rockland Elks Lodge was Dwayne Guy, a past Exalted Ruler and current State Secretary for Maine Elks Association, Loyal Knight Helen Rogers, Leading Knight Tom Rizzo, past Exalted Ruler and current Trustee Arthur Anderson and past Exalted Ruler and current Trustee Alan Heal.
