Robertson 5K takes off Aug. 13 in Thomaston

By Staff | Aug 08, 2017

Thomaston — The streets of this town will include runners on Sunday, Aug. 13 — on the move for a good cause as the inaugural Nathan Robertson Memorial 5K road race will take off on that day at 9 a.m.

Robertson was a 2006 Georges Valley High School graduate that played soccer, basketball and baseball for the Buccaneers. He passed away in 2008 after a three-year battle with desmoplastic small round cell tumor.

Event organizer Jared Porter, who was one of Robertson’s best friends growing up, said 100 percent of the proceeds raised will be donated to the Boston Children’s Hospital for Childhood Cancer Research.

The cost to participate is $15 for adults and $10 for students, with children ages 5 and younger free. Registration for the event will begin at 7 a.m.

The run/walk will begin and end at the American Legion Hall in Thomaston behind Main Street. The route will include Beechwood, Erin, Dwight, Roxbury, Thatcher, Water, Wadsworth, Hyler and Green streets. Racers/walkers will be able to pass through the Village Cemetary between Erin and Dwight street and leave an orange carnation on Robertson’s grave along the 5K route.

Following the race, there will be a bounce house, face painting, dunk tank and Darling’s Ice Cream For a Cause ice cream truck. Wiscasset Speedway also will send several race cars — which will be on display in the Legion Hall parking lot — and a pace truck for the 5K.

There also will be a raffle that will include 50 pounds of lobster, $150 gift certificate to the Hampton Inn, autographed Boston Red Sox memorabilia and four tickets to the Portland Sea Dogs, among other prizes.

The night will conclude with a performance by country music star Jason Michael Carroll at 6 p.m. at Watts Hall. Limited tickets are still available for that concert for $25.
