Augusta — Roberta Beatrice Hanson, 95, formerly of Granite Hill Estates, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018, at Maine General Rehabilitation Center at Glenridge.

She was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Fairhaven, Mass., the daughter of John and Beatrice (Maker) Tripp. She graduated from Fairhaven High School in 1940, attended Campbell’s Secretarial School and was an assistant librarian for three years at the Millicent Library in Fairhaven.

In 1944, Roberta married Alvin Holt Hanson, an ordained Episcopal priest from Lawrence, Mass. The couple started their life together in Topeka, Kan., where Alvin was a curate at Grace Cathedral. During the following 40 years, Roberta and her husband lived in Philadelphia, Fenton, Michi., New Berlin, N.Y.,and Cincinnati. After the Rev. Alvin Hanson served as priest for 19 years at Calvary Episcopal Church, Cincinnati, they retired to Thomaston in 1979, where Alvin died in 1995.

Roberta was an active member of St John’s Episcopal Church in Thomaston, where she served on the vestry for three years. She was a volunteer for the book shop at the Rockland Public Library for many years and also volunteered at the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum and at the gift shop at Marshall Point Lighthouse. She moved to Granite Hill in 2004, where she remained active as a member of the Gardens and Grounds Committee, was chairwoman of the Library Committee and served on the Executive Committee.

She is survived by two daughters, Gail Roberta Benesh and her husband, Gary, of Greenville, Ohio, and Amy Rowena Hanson of Augusta; two grandchildren: Shelly Hausman (Todd) of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Seth Benesh (Dena) of Cincinnati; four great-grandchildren, Mathias Holt Hausman, Greta Mauve Hausman, Nicholas Hanson Benesh and Leah Jane Benesh.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 20 Union St., Hallowell. There will be a reception immediately following the service in the Parish Hall.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover, N.H.
