River Arts calls for next show

Dec 12, 2012

Damariscotta — River Arts is accepting submissions for its upcoming juried exhibition “Black, White, Gray” at its newly-expanded and refurbished gallery and arts center on Route 1, next to N.C. Hunt Lumber. The show will run from Friday, Dec. 28 to Jan. 24.

Submissions must use only black, white or gray (any of these or a combination) and no other hues. Frames may be any color. All media, styles and subjects are welcome. All work entered must be for sale. Wall-hung work should not exceed 40 inches in any dimension, and for safety reasons Plexiglas or other non-glass option should be used for work over 34 inches, excluding pastels.

Juror for “Black, White, Gray” is Robert Colburn, curator and manager of the Bayview Galleries in Camden and Brunswick. From a family of professional artists, Robert Colburn grew up in Maine and decided at an early age to pursue art as a career. In addition to his busy career at Bayview Galleries, he remains active as a painter, exhibiting at Asymmetrick Arts in Rockland, Bayview Galleries and many other locations.

Citing his study at Bowdoin College with artists such as Thomas Cornell, Ann Harris and Anne Lofquist as important experiences, Colburn describes his present artistic philosophy as a mixture inspired by both old and contemporary masters. In his own work, he values working on site, painting works and creating studies for paintings in the natural world.

Drop-off dates at River Arts’ new premises are Friday and Saturday, Dec. 21 and 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early submissions are accepted within usual gallery hours. Artists may submit up to three works for an entry fee of $20, $15 for members. Artists will be notified by email or phone of the juror’s decision. Submissions may not have been show at River Arts previously.

Entry forms are available online at riverartsme.org and at the gallery when submitting. The opening reception will be Friday, Dec. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. Queries and requests may be directed to River Arts at 563-1507 or by email to info@riverartsme.org. River Arts is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
