Waldoboro — An almost eerie fog slowly, but surely, descended over the field as Oceanside and host Medomak Valley entertained a large homecoming crowd in a rough-and-tumble, 48-minute high school football battle in which neither the Panthers nor Mariners wanted to give an inch.

When the final horn sounded on Friday night, Sept. 14, the Panthers had clung to a hard-fought 7-6 homecoming win, a much-needed early-season victory and perhaps one of the most significant in the program's short history.

The Mariners had started the campaign 1-1 in competitive games with Mount Desert Island and Nokomis of Newport, including being ranked among the top teams in Class C North, while the Panthers were 0-2, including a lopsided loss to two-time defending champion Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

Medomak Valley, outscored 76-6 in its first two games, scored a touchdown and kicked an extra point to hold a 7-0 halftime lead against Oceanside on Friday night under the lights, before the opponents battled tooth-and-nail in the second half, as the visitors, who had been outscored 61-60 in their first two games, tallied six points to climb within one.

That one point, ultimately, decided the outcome as the hosts nailed down an important victory.

Eli Miller rushed for a touchdown and Colvin Strandring kicked an extra point. Zach Cody rushed for the Mariner score.

Miller finished with 58 yards rushing and 33 yards passing, and a TD. Standring ran for 27 yards and also kicked an extra point. Brian Pollard made two catches for 28 yards, with one reception directly leading to Miller's subsequent TD.

Defensively, Brian Pollard (8 solo tackles, 2 interceptions), Jacob Weston (4 tackles, interception), Dakota Nutter (8 tackles) and Miller (6 tackles) keyed the hosts.

"It was a hard-fought game and a big win for us," said Panther coach Ryan Snell. "We were proud of how the kids competed and believed in each other. The crowd was phenomenal. The kids are ready to get back to work and get ready for a big one against 2-1 Old Town Friday night."

For Oceanside, Cody turned in yeoman work on the ground, as he had 18 carries for a whopping 183 yards and touchdown, while Ben Ripley added 14 carries for 90 yards and Michael Yates 11 carries for 73 yards. Quarterback Karl Ilvonen finished 2-of-6 passing for 28 yards.

At times, turnovers that stymied potential scoring drives — along with sturdy, aggressive Panther defense — thwarted the Mariners. While Medomak Valley did damage on the ground and in the air, Oceanside chewed up much of its offensive yardage on the ground, with its three top ballcarriers going for 346 yards.

"Hats off to Medomak," said Oceanside coach Wes Drinkwater. "They did what they needed to do to beat us. We came in with low energy, like it was gonna be a cake walk. We couldn’t sustain drives. Penalties and not taking care of the football caused us to beat ourselves."

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Class C North, Oceanside (1-2, 9.3750 points) is fourth and Medomak Valley (1-2, 7.8125 points) fifth. MCI (2-1, 17.1875 points) is first in the 11-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
