‘Purple Rose’ is Allen at his magical best

Thomaston — The Friends of the Thomaston Public Library’s Friday Night Film Series, screening films weekly at 6:30 p.m. in Room 200 of the library, 60 Main St./Route 1, highlights Woody Allen films for January.

On Friday, Jan. 24, the series continues with “The Purple Rose of Cairo” (1985, USA). The film slips through the looking glass of cinematic convention to create a magical, comic fable about life, love, illusion and hope. Starring Mia Farrow, Jeff Daniels and Dianne Wiest, this Oscar-nominated film showcases Allen at his most imaginative and compassionate, capturing the magic of the cinema in all its bittersweet glory.

The PG-rated film runs 84 minutes. Closing out the Woody Allen series is “The Front” (1976, USA) on Jan. 31.

Friday Night Films are open to the public and free of charge, but donations are gratefully accepted. The Thomaston Academy Building is handicapped accessible from the rear entrance. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call the library at 354-2453.
