Presidential primary deadline for changing party affiliation is Feb. 14

By Gabriel Blodgett | Feb 04, 2020

Hope — The deadline to change party affiliation to vote in the March 3 Presidential Primary is Feb. 14.

State law requires people wishing to vote in a primary election to be enrolled in a political party 15 days before that party’s primary, according to Maine Director of Elections Melissa Packard.

This year, though, Washington’s Birthday falls on Feb. 17, which leaves Feb. 14 as the last day town offices will be open for people to change their affiliation.

Maine currently recognizes Democrat, Republican, and Green Independent as the only political parties.

Unenrolled voters, including those who designate themselves as “Independent” can enroll in a party at any time, including the day of the primary, as Maine does not have an Independent Party.

The same is true for unregistered voters, who can enroll in a party at any point up to the primary.
