Old Town — The Oceanside boys basketball team continued its preparation for the official campaign with two spirited preseason contests on Saturday, Nov. 30 against Class C Penquis Valley of Milo and Class AA Edward Little of Auburn at MacKenzie Gymnasium in the Old Town Coyote Classic.

In high school court affairs, Oceanside split with the Patriots and Red Eddies, as it beat its smaller Class C North opponent Penquis 66-52 and lost to its much larger Class AA North foe Edward Little 81-59.

Penquis has 180 students, Oceanside about 475 and Edward Little nearly 1,000

The Mariners, under the direction of first-year coach Larry Reed, include Nathan Coombs, Everett Allyn, Everett Spear, Cameron Kingsbury, Hayden Jacques, Aidan Munro, Karl Ilvonen, Alex Bartlett, Elliot Lucier, Landdon Willis, Bodhi Ames, Drew Daggett, Jack Elwell and Gavyn Tower.

Oceanside bolted to a 10-0 lead against the Patriots and stayed a step or two ahead of Penquis the rest of the way for a 66-52 win. Tower poured in 26 points and Kingsbury and Ames 10 for the Mariners, while Corbin Cyr led Penquis with 12, Cameron Bailey 11 and Zak Mills nine.

The Mariners fell to Edward Little 81-59, as Munro tallied 15 points, Kingsbury 14 and Ames eight for Oceanside. Max Creaser keyed the Red Eddies with 22 points and John Shea 16.

Coach Reed said Daggett, Ames and Tower led Oceanside on the boards in the two games.

"Cam Kingsbury did a sensational job of handling the ball in both games and getting the Mariners into their offensive sets," the coach said.

Reed said "although the Edward Little game was a bit one-sided, it was a good chance for us to play a very good team, that plays very similar to the style that Maranacook [of Readfield] will in our first regular-season contest."

Reed said his friend Mike Adams is coach of Edward Little and "he did not let the contest get out of hand," as the Red Eddies have a much larger enrollment and legitimate state-championship aspirations, while the Mariners, with a new coach, continue to develop chemistry and build teamwork early in the year.

The Coyote Classic included the Old Town, Edward Little, Mount View of Thorndike and Oceanside girls and Old Town, Edward Little, Penquis Valley and Oceanside boys.
