Rockland — One week removed from its most recent game — a 97-94 triple-overtime loss to defending state champion and unbeaten Hermon — the Oceanside boys basketball team likely did not expect much push back from winless Belfast on Friday night, Dec. 28.

Well, that is exactly what the Mariners got from the young, hungry Lions as the squads wrapped the calendar year with a doozy on the hardwood that saw the hosts pushed to overtime for the second straight contest.

And while the Lions got a terrific second-half effort from sophomore guard Jason Bartlett — who seemingly put the visitors on his back several times in an effort to bring Belfast its first win of the campaign — the Mariners went 9-of-10 from the free-throw line in the OT and managed to pull away from the Lions to net a hard-fought 63-56 victory.

Cooper Wirkala and Amos Anderson posted double-doubles in the win for Oceanside as Wirkala tossed in 32 points and collected 10 rebounds and Anderson 13 points and 11 caroms.

The tandem also accounted for all 20 of the Mariners’ free-throw attempts as Wirkala was 11-of-12 (92 percent) from the foul line and Anderson 5-of-8 (62 percent) — in fact, the duo combined for a 16-of-20 (80 percent) night from the charity stripe.

Trevor Reed also chipped in 14 points, six steals and five assists, while Jaden Martin and Drew Daggett added a hoop for the hosts.

Bartlett’s 18-point night keyed Belfast, while Chris Kelley added 17; Luke Lightner, seven; Wilder Magruder, six; Dakota Payson, four; and Tanner Veilleux and Grady Doolan, two.

The Lions finished 6-of-11 (54 percent) from the foul line.

Oceanside had five treys on the night — four from Reed and one from Wirkala — while Bartlett and Kelley had two triples for Belfast.

The Mariners jumped to a quick 8-1 lead after a pair of treys by Reed and baseline jumper by Wirkala as the hosts largely maintained a seven-point cushion in the game’s opening minutes — and led by as many as nine in the stanza — but the Lions went on a 15-0 burst that spanned into the second quarter as the visitors took their first lead of the game.

Trailing 15-6, the Lions got a fadeaway on the baseline by Kelley, a hoop by Veilleux off a fast break, a Kelley 3-pointer, a Bartlett fadeaway to knot the score and a bucket by Payson in the paint to give Belfast a 17-15 lead to end the stanza.

Magruder scored in the paint followed by a trey from Bartlett to give the Lions a 22-15 advantage with 6:50 to play in the half.

Oceanside stayed within striking distance, but did not regain the edge until the first portion of the third quarter on a hoop by Wirkala as the Mariners forged ahead 32-31.

After Kelley and Reed traded hoops, the hosts held their lead through the rest of the third quarter before Belfast retook a 46-44 advantage after Bartlett canned a 3-pointer in transition to begin the fourth.

Neither team led by more than three points the entire fourth quarter.

Oceanside maintained possession for the final two-plus minutes of play and used three timeouts in the span, and ultimately held for the last shot — a baseline jumper by Reed — which fell short just before the buzzer sounded to end regulation.

Wirkala hit a pair of free throws to give the Mariners a 56-54 edge and after Kelley tied the score for the Lions with a short jumper, Wirkala converted a left-handed layup and the Mariners hit their foul shots down the stretch to hold on.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class B North, Oceanside (4-2, 5.9259 points) is ninth, while Belfast (0-6, no points) is tied for14th. Mount Desert Island (6-1, 22.0988 points) is first in the 16-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
