Rockland — The No. 4 Oceanside unified basketball team hit the court for what proved the final time this season on Friday, March 9 in a North quarterfinal playoff showdown with No. 5 Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft.

And the Ponies, who traveled 90 miles just to face the Mariners on Friday, had more than enough legs to gallop past the hosts — and onto the next round — with a 53-42 high school court win.

With the victory, the No. 5 Ponies (5-4) advance to the semifinals, where they will play top-ranked Hampden/Bangor (7-1).

Oceanside’s season concluded at 2-5.

Oceanside includes Krista Butler, Michael Dougherty, Titus Kaewthong, Ryan Morse, Matt Waldron, Erica Dyer, Angel Seiders, Nick Colson, Ryan Crockett, Ryan Warren, Casey Pine and Kaytlyn Pierce. The coaches are Joanna Hall, Colleen Rickard and Connor Harvey and the scorekeeper Jill Hanley.

Foxcroft Academy team members consist of Virginia Macomber, Chase Paul, Sue Kim, Christian Blakely, Gabe Williams, Austin Gil, Austin Jackson, Ethan Curtis, Dalton Clark, Tyler Kessler, Spencer Ireland, John Judkins, R.J. Ramp, Gabe Taylor, Jared Atkinson and Austin McKenna. The coaches are Arnold Shorey and Tim Smith.

The Ponies held a 27-15 lead at halftime and maintained a double-digit advantage for much of the second half, though the Mariners made several spirit rallies in the final 20 minutes of action.

“It went very good,” said Crockett. “I think Foxcroft played really good, they were really good sports and I hope they win the championship. My parents always raised me that it’s not about winning, it’s about having fun playing the game.”

“We played very well,” said Colson. “Angel Seiders did very good. It went really well. Couldn’t have said it better myself.”

Colson and Warren, two of the team’s six seniors, led the way for Oceanside with 10 points, while Crockett and Pierce added six; Dougherty, four; and Morse, Seiders and Waldron, two.

Kessler poured in 24 points for Foxcroft Academy, while Atkinson added 15; Blakeley, seven; Curtis, three; and Ireland and Judkins, two.

The Ponies were paced by Kessler, particularly in the second half, as the junior pumped in 16 of the team’s 26 points in the stanza.

Oceanside's spirit squad includes Julia Bartlett, Lindsey Brooks, Julia Clough, Erin Dugan, Justin Hunt, Kristina Ferguson, Jacqueline Hall, Mattie Hooper, Steffani-Rae Jillson, Valerie Lorleberg, Katherine McCue, Lexie McMahan, Paige Nystrom and Emily Tyler.
