The hits, catches, pitches, slides and smiles are back — as is baseball in the Midcoast.

The opening pitches of the 2020 Maine Independent Baseball League were thrown on Wednesday, June 24 as the 17U Division swung into action on that day and throughout the weekend.

Twelve teams statewide began their seasons on Wednesday, one with Midcoast interest as the Maineiacs defeated the Raiders 10-0 in six innings in Waldoboro. Both teams are from the same school district so it was a season-opening rivalry game, of sorts.

Teams from Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties continued early-season play over the weekend.

On Sunday, June 28, Rock Coast Rip Tide defeated Sebasticook 3-1 and Fairfield 7-1 to go 2-0 on the weekend, while the Raiders went 1-1 with a 2-1 win over the Capital Bombers and 7-4 loss to Skowhegan and Midcoast finished 0-2 in its doubleheader, as it fell 7-5 to Hermon and 5-4 to the River Hawks. Additionally, the Maineiacs went 0-2, as they lost 11-1 and 9-1 to the Turner Bandits.
