Thomaston — A Rhode Island man was arrested March 26 after police said he stole a truck shortly after crashing his vehicle in Thomaston and fleeing.

Robert Bracken, 25, was arrested by Thomaston police March 26 and charged with theft of the vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, operating under the influence, felony violating a condition of release and failure to report an accident.

The incidents began at 11:57 p.m. On March 25, officers responded to a car crashing into pole on Old County Road. The car was blocking both lanes of the road. The car was still running but was heavily damaged.

A multi-agency search for the driver began with no success. Police also tried locating him by pinging his cellphone.

At 4:50 a.m. March 26, officers responded to Nouria Energy at the corner of New County Road and Dexter Street for a report of an intoxicated man in the store who drove there in a truck. Responding officers located the man on New County Road and identified him as Bracken.

He made his initial appearance March 26 in the Knox County court.
