Police identify St. George woman found dead on beach

St. George — The cause of death of a 69-year-old St. George woman found on a beach near her home Tuesday morning, Oct. 2, has not yet been determined.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office received a call shortly after 5 a.m. from the husband of Cherie Yattaw. He reported that his wife had not been feeling well and had gone out during the night but not returned.

Deputy Nathaniel Jack responded and soon found the woman's body on Drift Inn Beach.

Knox County Chief Deputy Tim Carroll said it is standard procedure to call in state police if the cause of death is not known. No foul play is suspected police are awaiting results from the Maine Medical Examiner's Office on the cause of death.

Drift Inn Beach is near the end of the St. George peninsula.

St. George Fire and Rescue and Knox County Regional Communications Center assisted with the initial call.
