Poetry of Black Mountain, at Yvette Torres

Jul 06, 2018
Collage poems by Black Mountain artist Susan Weil will be part of a poetry reading at Rockland’s Yvette Torres Gallery.

Rockland — Yvette Torres Fine Art is currently exhibiting “Woman Artists of Black Mountain College,” which was a center of avant-garde art, poetry, music and dance in the 1940s and ‘50s. In conjunction with the show, there will be a poetry reading of some of the artists who were also poets, and some who were poets exclusively, Sunday, July 15, at 4 p.m.

The poets are Susan Weil, whose poetry was combined with her art in collage poems; M.C. Richards, who painted and was a potter, but whose primary artistic expression was writing; Verlaine Boyd; and Cynthia Homire, as well as Mary Fiore, wife of artist and Black Mountain College teacher Joseph Fiore. Poetry will be read by four local writers.

YTFA has been showing the work of Black Mountain College artists since the gallery’s early days in 2007. Gallery hours at the second-floor gallery at 464 Main St. are Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call 332-4014.
