Rockland — Rockland Public Library has announced the departure of Rockland Poet Laureate Joanna Hynd. Hynd was appointed the city’s poet laureate in April 2016 and signed on for a second term, but will be leaving the Midcoast shortly to seek other opportunities and adventures.

The library wishes her well in her future endeavors and thanks her for the enthusiasm with which she promoted poetry, poets and creativity in the Rockland community. Mary Jane Martin, part-time library employee, member of Poetry Month Rockland since its inception and fellow poet and poetry advocate, will act as interim Poet Laureate until the current term ends.

The library also reminds people that the annual Poetry Contest is open and accepting poems until Aug. 1. The theme this year is Speak Out! Poets are invited to share what is happening in their world, from current events to hot button issues to what is exciting locally. There are categories for Children, Teens and Adults; full contest rules can be found at rocklandlibrary.org.

The contest winners will be announced in time for Rockland Public Library’s September Poetry Month Celebration and the annual Millay Festival.
