“Our Mother” is a 1922 oil on canvas by N.C. Wyeth, on loan to the Farnsworth from the Collection of The Hill School, Pottstown, Pa.

Rockland — On Saturday, June 16, the downtown Farnsworth Art Museum will open an exhibition of works by artist N.C. Wyeth in the museum’s Wyeth Center, at the corner of Union and Grace streets. “N.C. Wyeth: Poems of American Patriotism” features 16 works by the artist created to illustrate an anthology of some of this country’s best-known poems. The exhibition will remain on view through Oct. 28.

In 1922, famed American illustrator Newell Convers Wyeth was commissioned to illustrate a new edition of Brander Matthews’ “Poems of American Patriotism,” a compilation of poems by various American authors first published in 1882. The book included “old favorites” such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Paul Revere’s Ride,” Oliver Wendell Holmes’ “Grandmother’s Story of Bunker Hill Battle,” Francis Scott Key’s “Star Spangled Banner,” Julia Ward Howe’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” John Greenleaf Whittier’s “Barbara Frietchie” and Walt Whitman’s “O Captain! My Captain!”

Among its other well-known authors were Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Cullen Bryant, Bret Harte, Rudyard Kipling and Edith Wharton. This exhibition includes the surviving 16 of 17 Wyeth paintings (one was destroyed in a fire), generously lent to the Farnsworth by The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa.

A members’ opening reception will take place at the Wyeth Center Friday, June 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. On Wednesday, June 20, Farnsworth Chief Curator Michael Komanecky will present on the exhibition as the museum’s first Stephen May and Kathryn B. Wilson Lecture at 2 p.m. in the museum’s auditorium.

Lead exhibition sponsors are Linda Bean’s Maine Wyeth Gallery; and Sasha and Ed Bass. Exhibition support has been generously provided by Anna Mae Twigg, in memory of George Twigg III, as well as an anonymous donation. Midcoast Community Partners for this exhibition include the O’Hara Corporation, and Strout & Payson, P.A. Primary media sponsor of the exhibition is Maine Home + Design.
