Plourde, Ward keep playing, studying hard in college

Former Mariners excel on field, in classroom at respective schools

Former Oceanside High School field hockey players Alison Ward and Hanna Plourde have been selected to the 2013 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA)Division 3 National Academic Squad. Ward also was selected in 2012-13.

To be named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad, student-athletes must possess a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the 2013-2014 academic year.

In addition, Plourde was named a 2013 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division 3 Scholar of Distinction, having achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of the 2013-14 academic year.

Plourde is a freshman at University of New England majoring in nursing, and is a 2013 graduate of Oceanside High School.

Plourde is the daughter of Kim and Brian Plourde of Rockland.

Ward is a sophomore at the University of Southern Maine. Majoring in mathematics, Ward is a member of the University's Pioneers Scholar program — a scholarship program for some of the top students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Ward is a 2012 graduate of Oceanside High School.

Ward is the daughter of Hal and Linda Ward of Rockland.
