Only one more week to get your design ideas submitted! Our Town Belfast’s design committee is anxiously awaiting this year’s functional design submissions for “Please, Be Seated!”  The committee will be reinstalling some of last year’s artistic seating creations at various downtown sites and would like to add 12 new, family-friendly structures to that group.  This call for design submissions is open to any individual or team who has an idea for a bench or chair that can adorn Belfast’s sidewalks and parks this summer. Due to an influx of bench designs, preference will be given to chair designs this year.  Our Town Belfast encourages creatives in the community to challenge themselves or find a buddy, a family member or a team and put that pencil to paper before March 28, 2014.

“Please, Be Seated!” annually showcases the area’s local talents by providing a welcoming attraction to locals and visitors alike.  The chairs and benches encourage downtown exploration and relaxation in our charming retail, restaurant and arts district on the banks of Belfast Bay. Our Town Belfast’s Executive Director Breanna Pinkham Bebb sees the project impact as three-fold:  “Yes, it’s a fun and inviting aspect of the downtown, but at the same time it is a tool for area development in that we can attract people to different areas and places where new businesses are opening up, in addition to bringing visibility to the work of our many incredible area artists and designers.”

If you are interested in submitting a design, you can download an application through the Our Town Belfast website You can also email your questions and designs to  You can drop off your completed forms and sketches to the OTB office, Suite 6, 171 High Street, Belfast, located in the Mini Mall.

Have fun in designing your functional art! The most important factor in a design is safety.  Designs should not have small parts, protruding elements, trip factors, stability or balance issues and should hold up in all kinds of weather.  All designs will be reviewed by the committee for artistic merit and appropriateness as public art structures.  The creators, whose designs are chosen, will be expected to maintain their projects as long as they are on display, from June to October.

The design committee is also looking for sponsorships and wishes to thank last year’s generous “Please, Be Seated!” business supporters:  The City of Belfast, Bangor Savings Bank, Belfast Co-Op, Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate / Town and Country, Brambles, Camden National Bank, Chocolate Drop Candy Shop, Colburn Shoe Store, Coyote Moon, Front Street Shipyard, The Green Store, Knox Brothers, Mainely Pottery, Woodward Law Offices, Sandra Ruch, Donna Dubrow, Christina Sedoti, and Amy M. Marnacheck, O.D.

This year sponsorships are all one level: $300.  Of that amount $250 goes to the artists and $50 is used to fund signs, posters and marketing expenses. (We do want the rest of the world to know about this great project!)  A sponsor may designate a specific artist.  To be a sponsor, please contact Our Town Belfast by calling (207)323-9100.
