UNION — On Saturday, Sept. 14, the Luther-Mauceri-Whitehead Trio will give a performance of electro-acoustic music at the Pour Farm in Union from 6 to 8 p.m. The group features Tom Luther (electronics, programming, keyboard), Frank Mauceri (saxophones), and Mike Whitehead (trumpet/flugelhorn).

The music straddles the worlds of ambient electronic music, jazz improvisation, and interactive computer music. “I’m really interested in how humans interact with each other, with technology, and with each other through the use of technology. This project is really an exploration into how to mix those ideas and challenge ourselves as improvisers,” Luther said.

The systems that Luther has designed for this performance allow performers to directly or indirectly affect the sound of the other group members. The loudness of the trumpet could affect the location of the saxophone within a stereo field. The note the saxophone sounds can change the notes of the synthesizer loops.

Luther uses Max 8, made by Cycling 74, to design the systems that propel and inspire the group.”I like the idea of creating sonic worlds for us to explore,” said Luther, “and within those worlds we have dependencies on one another, and work together to make cool sounds. This is pretty much the world I want to live in."

The Luther-Mauceri-Whitehead Trio has recorded one album previously, called “Finding the Boxmaker” (2019), available through Bandcamp at The Pour Farm is located at 56 Crawfordsburn Lane. Admission is free.
