Planet Fitness entering Rockland orbit

This is a graphic submitted for the sign application for a Planet Fitness in Rockland.

Rockland — A sign company has submitted an application to Rockland's Code Enforcement Office to erect a Planet Fitness sign over the former J.C. Penney store.

Bailey Signs Inc. of Westbrook filed the application Friday, March 8. This follows emails from an architectural firm to the city in January in which it said it was designing the interior for a fitness center at the 75 Maverick St. location.

Planet Fitness has not confirmed it will be opening a center in Rockland, but said Monday more information should be available in a couple of weeks.

The property is owned by Rockland Plaza Realty Corp. of Chestnut Hill, Mass., which has owned it since the shopping center was constructed in 1961.

Planet Fitness has centers in several locations in Maine -- including Augusta, Waterville, Bangor, Brunswick, Portland, Auburn, Westbrook, Windham, Falmouth and Biddeford.

J.C. Penney closed in July 2017.

I hope it is opening so we can have a affordable fitness center. A lot of us can not afford the expensive gym costs that we have around here.

Planet Fitness possibly coming to Rockland I am stoked.  Just returned from my winter get away to sunny Florida (wish I could have stayed longer, but need to get back to work).  Each year I purchase a Planet Fitness membership.  A local membership can be purchased for $10 a month.  Yes I am serious $10 a month, or a premium membership for $20 a month this includes a variety of special in-house features and the ability to visit any other Planet Fitness in the country for FREE. Great for me because I traveled to various cities during my stay and could visit a different gym several times a week.  Their facilities are first class with all new equipment and friendly staff members.  This review is NOT sponsored by the way, I just really like the place.  I was bummed since I have returned because the closest club is Augusta and was expecting to fork out $40 to $50 bucks a month just to work out.  So hurry up and open I'm ready.
