Waldoboro — It was a night to celebrate on and off the hardwood Wednesday night, Jan. 2 as the Medomak Valley basketball teams hosted county-rival Lincoln Academy of Newcastle in the second annual “Paws for the Cause,” the school’s fundraiser for breast cancer awareness.

Not only did the Panthers emerge with victories — which put the Lincoln County high school squads at 6-1 on the relatively young season — but the cause raised thousands of dollars for the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition.

Many in attendance donned pink attire in support of the event, while donations were accepted during the evening with the purchase of pink t-shirts, as well as personalized pink paws, which were hung on the ends of the gymnasium.

However, the focus was on the games, and the specialized pink uniforms sported by the Panthers.

Those uniforms were made possible by John and Gayle Murphy of Owls Head, who made a significant donation to MVHS last year in an effort to purchase the uniforms for the annual event.

Gayle Murphy, president of the Medomak Valley All Sports Boosters, which also was a co-host of Wednesday's event with the school's athletic department, is a breast cancer survivor.

John Murphy said Wednesday’s turnout, which raised about $7,000 for the MBCC, is “thanks to the efforts of our student-athletes and coaches and the unbelievable generosity of our community.”

“One of the key parts of our fundraiser is the selling of the paws that get hung in the gym,” said John. “Many of those paws are in memory or support of a loved one who have had their own personal battle with cancer. But one of the things that makes that even more special is that it’s the part of the program that the kids and coaches are responsible for undertaking.

"Last year, they sold $1,800 worth of paws, which was astonishing to us. This year, they blew that number out of the water by selling $2,400 worth. Like so many other people in the community, the kids and coaches have really embraced the event and the cause, and in the case of the kids, they are learning such an important lesson in what community service is all about.”

The following is a recap of both games:

At Waldoboro Jan. 2, the Panthers hit their free throws down the stretch and emerged with a narrow win over the Eagles. Lincoln Academy led 17-15 after the first quarter and 25-24 at halftime, while Medomak Valley took a 34-33 advantage after three quarters.

Sadie Cohen turned in a sensational performance for the Panthers as she netted 18 points, along with 16 rebounds, nine caroms of which came in the pivotal fourth quarter, for the hosts.

Maddy White also scored nine points for Medomak Valley, Abby Lash, six; Kayla Donlin and Aubrey Schaeffer, five; and Lydia Simmons and Autumn Ripley, two.

Chelsea Williams scored 14 points for Lincoln Academy, while Maddy York added 11; Ellie Mathews, Payson Kaler and Olivia Stiles, four; Joy Hedrick, three; and Alison York and Lizzie Ober, two.

The Panthers finished 20-of-31 (64 percent) from the foul line, while the Eagles were 18-of-22 (82 percent).

Lash hit the lone trey for the hosts, while the visitors made a pair of 3-pointers — one from Hedrick and Maddy York.

Medomak Valley led by as many as five points in the final stanza after Cohen sliced to the hoop for a field goal to make the score 40-35, but Lincoln Academy hung tough and eventually cut its deficit to 43-42 later in the quarter after Hedrick buried a 3-pointer.

Cohen missed a pair of foul shots — which would have given the Panthers a three-point edge — but she made a big impact on the offensive glass over the final 30 seconds of the game.

White hit the front end of three consecutive 1-and-1 opportunities from the charity stripe and missed the back end on all three, but it was Cohen who corralled three straight offensive rebounds to allow Medomak Valley to continually retain possession and White’s free throws gave the hosts a 46-42 lead with 15.5 seconds to go.

After Maddy York hit a pair of foul shots for the Eagles and Schaeffer one for the Panthers, the visitors had one last chance to send the game to overtime, but an off-balanced attempt from beyond the arc missed its mark.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class A North, Medomak Valley (6-1, 14.0123 points) is third, while Skowhegan (7-0, 25.6790 points) is first in the 12-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.

At Waldoboro Jan. 2, the Panthers slowly pulled away from the Eagles in the second half and netted their sixth win in seven tries. Medomak Valley led 15-9, 28-18 and 45-28 at the quarter breaks.

Gabe Allaire scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack for the winners, while Ryan Creamer added 10; Jake Bickmore and Trevor Brown, eight; Alec Coughlin, seven; Brandon Starr, three; Parker Morrison, two; and Pat McKenney, Kevin White and Carson Murphy, one.

Sullivan Fink scored 11 points for the Eagles, while Joe Giberson and Bryce York added nine; Joel Hatch, six; and Nick Prior and Chase Crockett, two.

Medomak Valley was 11-of-19 (58 percent) from the foul line, while Lincoln Academy was 1-of-6 (17 percent).

The Panthers hit five treys — two from Allaire and Bickmore and one from Creamer — while the Eagles got one from Fink and York.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Class A North, Medomak Valley (6-1, 5.9877 points) is seventh, while Mount Blue of Farmington (5-2, 20.2469 points) is first in the 12-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
