Waldoboro — Medomak Valley High School held its annual Philbrook Speech competition April 13, an event that highlights and rewards juniors and seniors who have researched and taken a position on a topic, and urged their audience to a call to action.

This year’s competition of 20 students, coordinated by the English Language Arts Department, started many years ago with a bequest from the Philbrook family, but has continued in recent years because of another bequest from Conrad and Louise Ulbrich, in an effort to support and encourage Medomak students to aim high and achieve in public speaking.

Two judges from the community — Steve Cartwright and Willy Ulbrich — spent the morning scoring student speeches of 3 to 5 minutes in length. The winning speakers will receive $300 for first place, $150 for second place and $75 for third place. This yearKatherine Hatfield placed first, Chelcie Luce, second and Whitney Dow, third. Three students were also awarded honorable mentions: Ian Goode, Ezra Hinkley, and Sierra Weeks.
