From the desk of Pope Memorial Humane Society’s Events Coordinator Kasey Bielecki,

I was walking through the shelter the other day, capturing photos of some of our adoptable animals and realized we have some awesome animals right now. For example, Pilot the hound mix. At eight months old, Pilot has a ton of energy. He is a big, goofy boy who at almost 60 lbs. doesn’t realize he sounds like a small horse running around our pavilion.

We think Pilot would excel in a home that will continue his training. As a hound, once he puts nose to ground, he's off! Is he good with children? Well, considering his size and energy level, he would be a fit for a household with older children that can play a crucial role in his training.

Then there's Gabbie. I admit, I have a soft spot for tabby cats, I have three at home. Gabbie is a stunning one-year-old tabby that has eyes that will both melt your heart and keep you in line. Her stare put me in my place!

Recently spayed, she will be on the adoption floor soon, and I don’t think it will take long for the perfect person to come along.

With over 200 animals currently under our care, surprisingly there is only one rabbit available for adoption. Dapper Dan was found on the side of the road in Rockland. He was super friendly from the first day he arrived at the shelter and we thought for sure he would be claimed.

Sadly, no one came forward, but that's okay. Dapper Dan is now neutered and ready for a loving, bunny friendly home of his own. He thoroughly enjoys the company of people and will usually come running over when you enter the room, especially if you have some yummy, fresh veggies!

Looking for an orange cat? Lab mix puppy? Pair of gerbils? We don’t always know when animals are going to come in, and if you have an application already approved, it greatly increases your chances of being matched with the perfect animal.

If you’re thinking about adding a new pet to your family, head to our website at and fill out the adoption application. It can be emailed to where an adoption counselor will receive it and be in touch.

Filling out the application does not commit you to anything, but does start the process should the perfect animal come along for you. We will keep your application on file for three months. If you haven’t found that special someone, we’d be happy to reactivate it for you.

Pope Memorial Humane Society is still not open to public visits, but we are happily accepting adoptions applications and handling all adoptions by appointment.
