Rockport — Pen Bay Medical Center welcomes Karen Veit, RN, BSN, manager of the Case Management Department at Pen Bay Medical Center.

Veit is a registered nurse and in her new role, she will oversee management of the nurses who provide daily, clinically based coordination of care for hospital patients.

Nurses in the Case Management department collaborate with all members of the health care team as well as the patient and family to coordinate patient- and family-centered transitions of care. Case Management nurses also interact with Medicare, Medicaid and insurance companies on behalf of patients to determine eligibility or coverage of services or validate medical necessity for each day of the patient's hospital stay. The Case Management Department also includes medical social workers, who provide emotional support to patients and families undergoing the stress of a chronic, acute or terminal illness.

Veit, a Massachusetts native, moved to Maine in the 1970s and has worked at Pen Bay since 1976. She has served in a variety of roles, most recently in the Pen Bay Hospitalist Department. Her professional interests include clinical documentation and reducing the length of hospital stays and readmissions.

Veit is an avid gardener and enjoys the science of making fertile soil. Her backyard garden, featured in local garden tours, has been described as similar to a city park. She enjoys growing Christmas trees and recently cut her first crop. Veit's immediate family includes her daughter and young grand-daughter who live nearby.
