Rockport — Eighteen months after the ceremonial first shovelful of dirt was turned and following years of planning, a new medical complex will open on the campus of Pen Bay Medical Center.

Pen Bay announced on its website that the two-story, 41,513-square-foot PBMC Health Center will open Dec. 15.

The new facility will consolidate physicians' offices now located along Route 1, as well as providing room for additional specialists from Maine Medical Center in Portland.

PBMC Health Center will house PBMC’s primary care practices, including Internal Medicine and Family Medicine, Pediatrics and Pediatric Physical and Occupational Therapy, Audiology and Speech Pathology, and the Ear, Nose and Throat practice.

The Health Center also will provide space where specialists from the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center can meet with patients in Rockport, reducing the need for children with special health needs to travel to Portland, PBMC states on its website.

At the groundbreaking in June 2019, Dr. Mark Eggena, a co-chairperson of the capital campaign for the center, said the facility has been a longtime dream. "This is an extraordinary opportunity to expand care," he said.

Hebert Construction LLC, of Lewiston, is the construction manager. The architect is SMRT Inc. The building is located on Anchor Drive to the northwest of the hospital and lying between it and Sussman House hospice center.

The project was first approved by the Rockport Planning Board in March 2017. The estimated cost of the project at that time was nearly $13 million.
