Rockport — Pen Bay Medical Center has proposed an addition to deal with the overcrowding in its emergency department.

The proposal calls for an 5,000-square-foot addition to the existing emergency department and renovations to 3,000-square-feet of the existing department.

The Rockport Planning Board will review the proposal at its April 22 meeting that begins at 5:30 p.m. The meeting can be viewed on Livestream.

A pre-application review was held April 7. Pen Bay announced back in 2016, the need to expand the emergency department.

"There have been no upgrades to the Pen Bay Emergency Department since 1997. Daily census and activity logs demonstrate periods of time where there have been 22 patients in the Emergency Department with 13 rooms. Patients then are roomed in the hallways on a regular basis and Pen Bay’s security personnel are often exclusively dedicated to one-on-one scenarios with behavioral health patients," the application to the town states.

"Patient and provider feedback reflect suboptimal efficiencies in patient flow and rooming. Additionally, they need to upgrade their electronic monitoring systems and provide more efficient triage and trauma rooms. Volume trending data indicate the need for expansion as well as specific attention to a dedicated behavioral health component," the application states.
